Companies came up with a number of ideas to boost Ukrainian economy
At the end of April, the Chamber conducted a survey among companies to find out what obstacles Estonian companies have recently encountered in relation to trade with Ukraine. In addition, we wanted to know how the Estonian state and companies could contribute to the development of the Ukrainian economy.
The companies that responded to the survey pointed out that the war in Ukraine has had a negative impact on trade. Some companies confirmed that supplies had been cut off due to the war, but it is hoped that trade will recover at some point. In addition, respondents highlighted logistical problems. Firstly, transport to Ukraine is very limited, and at the same time the few available options are very expensive, especially in the direction of Ukraine-Estonia. Respondents also pointed out the high risk of losing products and money due to the war in Ukraine.
Proposals for Ukraine's economic recovery
Many respondents stated that an important precondition for Ukraine's economic recovery is that Russia ends its military action in Ukraine. Companies will then be able to help with the restoration of Ukraine's infrastructure. For example, one company stated that it could provide geotechnical solutions to help quickly and efficiently restore important infrastructure in Ukraine, such as railways, ports, airports and roads. Another company stated that it could provide measuring equipment necessary for road construction.
Several respondents emphasized that in order to increase imports of Ukrainian goods, the European Union should eliminate the customs duties imposed on Ukraine. Customs procedures should also be simplified. Mutual recognition of different certificates is also considered important, for example in relation to fire doors.
The companies that responded to the survey also pointed out that joining the European Union would have a positive impact on the Ukrainian economy, and Estonia should actively assist Ukraine in this process. European Union subsidies would give the necessary boost to Ukraine's economic growth.
The companies also considered it necessary that the exchanges of contacts between Estonia and Ukraine would continue. For example, it was suggested that B2B meetings could be organized between Estonian and Ukrainian companies. In addition, companies expect the state to provide full support to companies in obtaining timely information from Ukraine.
One respondent also called for the state and other parties to invite companies even more actively to discussion groups or action groups that discuss and look for ways to help Ukraine.
