From May 1st, the excise tax on diesel fuel, natural gas, and electricity will increase
On the first day of May, the excise tax on diesel fuel will rise by about 7 percent, natural gas by nearly 20 percent, and electricity by 45 percent. In addition, the excise taxes on several other fuels will also increase. The increase does not affect gasoline or special-purpose diesel fuel.
Currently, the excise tax on diesel fuel is 0.372 euros per liter, but from May 1st, it will be 0.399 euros per liter. The excise tax on special-purpose diesel fuel will remain at the current level of 0.021 euros per liter.
The excise tax on natural gas will increase by about 20 percent from May 1st. The excise tax on liquefied petroleum gas will increase by a similar magnitude. Additionally, the excise taxes on motor natural gas and liquefied motor natural gas will increase, but these will be under 5 percent.
On May 1st, the excise tax on electricity will also increase by 45 percent. Currently, the excise rate on electricity is 1 euro per megawatt-hour, but it will be 1.45 euros going forward.
Furthermore, the excise taxes on light heating oil, heavy heating oil, and oil shale fuel oil will rise from the beginning of May.
The purpose of these excise tax increases is to gradually bring the rates back to the levels they were before the crisis caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The excise rates will reach the pre-crisis level by May 1st, 2027.
