Nortal develops new system for Finnish Tax Admin
By 2019, the Finnish Tax Administration will replace several old tax-related systems with one new program package, the OmaVero service. The American GenTax program is being implemented by Fast and Nortal, the Finnish media reports.
OmaVero (MyTax) will replace the majority of the Tax Administration’s current e-services in the near future. The new system will allow people to complete a number of routines including file income tax returns for corporations or claim benefits under a joint administration, request a prepayment or additional prepayment for a corporation, file self-assessed tax returns (e.g. VAT or employer’s contributions), request a payment arrangement (self-assessed taxes, corporate income tax, gift tax and inheritance tax), request a tax debt certificate, file gift tax returns, and much more.
Eija Lönnroth, Program Director at the Tax Administration, told the Finnish media outlet Tivi that the user’s wishes have been taken into account rather flexibly when tailoring the product.
The huge IT undertaking reached a milestone in early November last year. On the first day, more than 30,000 users visited the service. No major problems were noted during the roll-out of the service. Users from a broader range of groups will have the opportunity to start using the system next autumn when income taxation for individual customers will be added to the service.
This is not Nortal’s first rodeo — Nortal has completed several projects for different tax administrations worldwide. One of the most significant impacts was made in Oman, where Nortal helped the tax administration go through an enormous change, bringing order and transparency to an unwieldy tax administration system required nothing less than a top-to-bottom overhaul. Nortal re-engineered the tax administration’s business processes from scratch, creating an entirely new tax vehicle with a powerful digital engine.
Now, Nortal is helping Oman introduce a new levy in the country — value added tax. At the same time, Nortal is bringing digital disruption to how the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) handles VAT. Nortal has already helped BURS digitalize the process of filing taxes. Previously, Botswana had to use tax agents to sort out their tax declarations and then queue for up to eight hours at the BURS office. Now they can file their taxes online in 5 minutes.
