What Do Mom and Dad Do for Work?
On February 19th this year, the initiative “Take Your Child to Work!” was held for the eighth time. As part of the day, employers opened their doors to employees' children, giving them the opportunity to get a closer look at their parents’ jobs and work environments.
Employers, schools, parents, and students from all over Estonia participated in the initiative. It was mainly aimed at students from grades 1 to 9, though both younger and older children could also take part. In total, approximately 8,300 students, 350 schools and kindergartens, and 2,500 employers participated. Both employers' and schools' interest in the initiative has grown year by year. Next year, “Take Your Child to Work!” will take place on February 18. More information is available at www.töölekaasa.ee.
What Did Employers Think?
Cybernetica AS: The children’s feedback was entirely positive. They had the chance to explore our offices, and parents involved them in meetings throughout the day. Senior Researcher Liina Kamm and Head of IT Services Martin Kannel spoke to the children about safe and friendly digital behavior.
DHL Logistics Estonia OÜ: We highly value the initiative and have organized it at our company several times. The children's feedback has been extremely positive – they are very interested in seeing where and with whom their parents work, and what their daily jobs are like.
Rõuge Municipal Government: Our “Take Your Child to Work!” day began with a joint information session, followed by a more work-focused meeting with the mayor. As they visited different officials, the children gained insights into the structure of municipal work, packed municipal newspapers for distribution, filled out worksheets, discussed the work of the social department, and exchanged knowledge about waste management. The children’s presence brought joyful variety and had a positive impact on staff morale.
What Did Schools Think?
Imavere School: Students really enjoy the initiative. Although they usually know where their parents work, many are not familiar with what exactly they do and what their job responsibilities involve. “Take Your Child to Work!” is very helpful in this regard, as it gives young people the chance to see firsthand what their parents do. Many gain new understanding of the knowledge and skills their parents’ professions require. It is highly appreciated.
Järva-Jaani Gymnasium: “Take Your Child to Work!” is a great initiative that allows children to explore their parents’ work and work environments. It helps them better understand various professions and make more informed decisions about their future. Parents appreciate the opportunity to contribute to their child’s education and collaborate with the school. The initiative also highlights employer family-friendliness and provides children with a chance to discover the world of work. It is beneficial for everyone – children, schools, parents, and employers – and strengthens the bond between home, school, work life, and the community while increasing young people’s awareness of future challenges.
Räpina Joint Gymnasium: We see the initiative as necessary and motivating, both for fostering entrepreneurial spirit and improving learning outcomes related to real life.
